    Frequently Asked Questions

Cancerous cells can grow within the stomach lining, which is known as stomach cancer or gastric cancer. Generally, stomach cancer is hard to diagnose because it doesn’t show many symptoms in the early stages. The difficulty in diagnosing stomach cancer is just an additional danger, along with it being a rare type of cancer. Usually, when stomach cancer is diagnosed, it has already spread to other parts of the body, making it challenging to treat. Even though the diagnosis and treatment are difficult, it is vital to know what will help you beat cancer. The stomach cancer treatment cost in India can be challenging and fluctuating as it depends on the surgeon’s experience and the kind of treatment required to treat your type and stage of cancer. For affordable treatment, you may contact Dr Praveen Kammar.

The exact reason that causes cancer cells to grow in the stomach is still unknown to scientists, but they know probable factors that increase the risk of getting the disease. One of the most common is H. pylori (bacteria) infection that causes ulcers. Gastritis (inflammation of the gut), pernicious anaemia (a type of anaemia that is long-lasting) and growths in your stomach (polyps) are other risk factors for stomach cancer.

Following are factors that can make you prone to this medical condition-

    • Obesity
    • Smoking
    • Having smoked, pickled or salty food rich diet
    • Type- A blood
    • Epstein-Barr virus infection
    • Specific genes
    • Working in coal, metal, timber or rubber industries
    • Exposure to asbestos
    • Stomach surgery for an ulcer

If you are worried about getting stomach cancer, consider a consultation appointment with Dr Praveen Kammar. Dr Kammar is widely recognised to have treated various types of cancers, including gastric cancer in India, and he can also help you with precautions against it.

Since early stages of stomach cancer don’t show symptoms, screening for stomach cancer is the only way to diagnose it. Once the symptoms start showing, it has usually spread to other organs. In case stomach cancer does cause symptoms, they include-

    • Abdominal Pain
    • Bloody stool
    • Feeling full after having a small meal
    • Feeling weak or tired because of low red blood cell count
    • Heartburn
    • Nausea
    • Poor Appetite
    • Swelling or fluid accumulation in the stomach
    • A vague discomfort in the abdomen (above the navel)
    • Vomiting
    • Weight loss
    • Yellowing of skin or eyes (jaundice) if cancer has spread to the liver

Other things like viral infection and ulcers are more likely to cause these symptoms than stomach cancer. Few of these symptoms can be caused by different types of cancer as well. If you experience these symptoms and notice that they are not getting better, you should consult a doctor as soon as possible.

Tests used to diagnose stomach cancer are as follows-

    • Upper Endoscopy:
A doctor passes down a thin tube with a camera at the end down your throat and into your stomach to look for signs of cancer.
    • Imaging Tests:
CT scan and barium swallow, a special type of X-Ray exam, are the imaging tests used to look for stomach cancer.
    • Biopsy:
If any suspicious area is detected during upper endoscopy, a sample tissue is removed using special tools for testing. Lab analysis is done after this.

    Staging of stomach cancer

To decide on the stomach cancer treatment, the doctor needs to know the stage. Tests and procedures that help determine the stage include-

    • Blood Testing:
Blood tests can help to check organ functioning. It will help to see if any organ like the liver is affected by cancer.
    • Imaging Tests:
Positron emission tomography (PET) and CT scan are included in imaging tests.
    • Endoscopic Ultrasound:
Like upper endoscopy, a thin tube with a camera at the end of the tube is passed into your stomach. A particular ultrasound device clicks images of your stomach. The images help your doctor see how deeply cancer has penetrated the stomach wall.
    • Exploratory Surgery
Exploratory surgery is a laparoscopic type of surgery. Your doctor can recommend it to look for signs that your cancer has spread to other parts than the stomach. Several tiny incisions are made on your stomach to insert the camera that sends images to the monitor in the operation room.

These procedures help your doctor determine the stage of your cancer. The stages of cancer are denoted by roman numerals starting from 0 to IV. The lowest stage of cancer, which only affects the inner layers of the stomach, is 0. The advanced stage of cancer, stage IV, means cancer has spread to other parts of the body. Your doctor will decide your stomach cancer treatment in India based on the stage of your cancer.

Various treatments are available for stomach cancer. The one you receive will depend on how long you have had the tumour and its stage. Following are the multiple stages and treatments that your doctor might suggest for treating them-

    Stage 0

Stage 0 indicates that the inner lining of your stomach has unhealthy cells that might develop into cancer. Surgery is the ultimate option to treat this stage, wherein the doctor removes a part or all of your stomach and nearby lymph nodes.

    Stage I

The tumour is in the lining of your stomach, and it might also be in nearby lymph nodes. You’ll have surgery as in stage 0 to remove a part or full stomach. In addition to that, chemotherapy or chemoradiation might be needed. Drugs are used in chemotherapy to kill cancerous cells, and chemoradiation is chemo plus radiation to destroy cancer cells with high energy beams. The doctor can suggest treatments before surgery to shrink the tumour or after surgery to kill cancer that is left.

    Stage II

Cancer is in deeper layers of the stomach and might also be in nearby lymph nodes. The primary treatment is still surgery to remove a tumour or the entire stomach. Your doctor will likely recommend chemotherapy or chemoradiation, or both, before and after the surgery.

    Stage III

Cancer is spread in all layers of the stomach and nearby organs like the spleen or colon. Or the tumour is small but deep into the lymph nodes. Usually, surgery to remove the entire stomach is performed. Chemotherapy and chemoradiation are also advised. There are chances to cure it completely, or else they at least relieve the symptoms. In a case where you are too weak to handle surgery, the doctor might suggest chemo, radiation or a combination of both.

    Stage IV

Stage IV is the last stage of cancer, and it means that cancer has spread to distant organs like the lungs or liver. It is challenging to cure, but treatment can manage symptoms efficiently.

According to the stage of your cancer, the complexity and the surgeon’s experience, your stomach cancer surgery cost in India might vary. But when you get a doctor like Dr Kammar, who has extensive experience, the surgery cost can be worth it.

The tumour can block the GI system. In that case-

    • A thin metal tube called a stent is inserted between your stomach and oesophagus or between your stomach and small intestine to help things flow.
    • You may undergo gastric bypass surgery to create a route around the tumour.
    • You might need surgery to remove a part of your stomach.
    • A procedure to destroy part of the tumour using a laser or an endoscope.

At this stage, chemo and radiation are helpful too. Targeted therapy is another option wherein drugs target only the cancer cells and leave the healthy cells alone.

If you are searching for a doctor in India, Dr Praveen Kammar is one to consider. While most patients look for the best hospitals for stomach cancer treatment in India, you would benefit from consulting with Dr Kammar. You can call in for an appointment or walk in for a checkup as well.
