Why is Liver Cancer so Deadly?
What makes liver cancer deadly?
Liver cancer can prove to be fatal as it is very dangerous. Even after successful treatment, it is seen that patients suffer again from the same and only 15% to 20% of all treatments prove to be effective.
In 50% to 80% of cases, there is liver cirrhosis along with liver cancer which makes it even tougher to treat it. People with liver cirrhosis have very few treatment options to treat liver cancer.
Liver cancer is most common in patients with Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C. Chronic active infection of these viruses can give rise to cirrhosis which may lead to liver cancer.
Unlike other cancer treatments liver cancer treatments are not advanced yet. This creates challenges in the surgery & recovery of the patients. Liver cancer is so deadly:
- Damage of liver even before surgery
- Complications during surgery
- Highly expensive treatment that makes it unaffordable for patients
All these factors result in a low success rate of liver cancer treatment.
Can Liver Cancer Cause Death?
Yes, liver cancer can cause death if it is not detected and treated at the right time. The liver is a vital organ responsible for digestion, detoxification, and blood clotting.
When cancer affects the liver, these essential functions gradually fail, which can become life-threatening.
The risk of death increases when liver cancer is diagnosed at an advanced stage or when it occurs along with liver cirrhosis.
In such cases, treatment becomes difficult and the chances of recovery reduce significantly.
Key Data About Liver Cancer Death Rates
1. Liver cancer causes a large number of deaths globally.
In 2022, an estimated 758,725 people died from liver cancer worldwide, making it one of the deadliest cancers in the world.
2. Liver cancer is a major contributor to cancer mortality.
Liver cancer is the third leading cause of cancer-related death globally, even though it is the sixth most commonly diagnosed cancer.
3. Liver cancer death numbers are expected to rise sharply by 2040.
If current trends continue, the number of deaths due to liver cancer could increase from over 830,000 in 2020 to about 1.3 million by 2040.
4. In India, liver cancer contributes significantly to cancer deaths.
According to estimates, 36,953 deaths in India in 2022 were due to liver cancer, accounting for about 4.0% of all cancer-related deaths in the country.
How Liver Cancer Can Lead to Death?
Liver cancer can become fatal due to multiple reasons:
-
The cancer damages healthy liver tissue, reducing liver function
-
Liver failure can occur as the disease progresses
-
Internal bleeding may happen due to poor blood clotting
-
Severe infections may develop due to weakened immunity
-
Cancer may spread to other organs like lungs or bones
When the liver stops functioning properly, the body is unable to survive without advanced medical support.
Is Death Always Inevitable in Liver Cancer?
No, death is not inevitable in every liver cancer case. Early-stage liver cancer can be treated successfully in some patients through surgery, liver transplantation, or targeted therapies. The outcome largely depends on:
-
Stage of Liver cancer at diagnosis
-
Overall liver health
-
Presence of cirrhosis or hepatitis
-
Timely medical intervention
Early diagnosis significantly improves survival chances.
Why Early Detection Is Crucial?
Liver cancer becomes deadly mainly because symptoms appear late. Many patients are diagnosed only when the disease has already progressed.
Regular screening is especially important for people with hepatitis B, hepatitis C, or liver cirrhosis.
With early detection and proper treatment planning, the risk of death from liver cancer can be reduced.
