    Frequently Asked Questions

The liver continuously filters our blood and converts nutrients and drugs in the blood into useful chemicals. It also helps in excretion by removing other waste chemical products and toxins from our blood. But what is liver cancer?

Liver cancers are of two types; primary and secondary.

Primary liver cancer arises in the liver; on the other hand, secondary cancer occurs when the cancer cell is transferred from other parts of the body. Usually, liver cancers are secondary, originating in other parts of the body and escalating to the liver through the bloodstream. The liver can absorb cancer cells from the bloodstream because all the blood passes through it.

Primary liver cancer mainly occurs due to the severity of hepatitis. It can then lead to liver cancer. There may be several types of tumours in the liver because it is made up of different cells. Some cells are noncancerous, while others are cancerous. Cost of treatment is always a factor to many patients, and the liver cancer treatment cost in India may vary depending on the type of tumour you have.

You must keep in mind that liver cancer is usually not apparent until it reaches an advanced stage. It means you may not feel anything initially while the disease is starting. However, here are some symptoms of liver cancer:

    • Jaundice: It can be a symptom of liver cancer where your eyes and skin become yellow.
    • Unexplained Weight loss: There might be a chance of sudden weight loss even if you don’t control your diet or try to lose weight.
    • Enlarged liver: Another sign of liver cancer is having an enlarged liver, spleen, or both.
    • Pain near shoulder blade: Liver cancer may cause pain close to your right shoulder blade.
    • Abdominal pain or swelling: There may be abdominal pain, and you might see that there is swelling near it. You might also feel fluid buildup near your abdomen.
    • Others: Other common symptoms include fever, vomiting, fatigue, nausea, itching, back pain, and you may feel full after having a small meal.

Apart from these, your veins under the abdominal skin may get swollen. There may be low blood sugar level, high level of cholesterol, and calcium. If you have any of the above symptoms, you should get a health checkup.

While consulting with a specialist when the symptoms are mild help detect the problem, it also helps balance the treatment cost. Did you know the severity of the medical condition is one factor that determines the liver cancer surgery cost in India? If you experience any symptoms, you may consider consulting with Dr Praveen Kammar.

Doctors determine the stage of your liver cancer before proceeding with the treatment. It is called stage grouping, which is shown in Roman letters I, II, III, and IV, respectively, where the severity of the disease increases from ‘I’ to ‘IV’. Liver cancer stage ‘I’ refers to the earliest stage, and ‘IV’ is the most advanced stage of liver cancer.

Take a look at the different stages of liver cancer to understand it in detail:

    ‘Stage I’ Liver Cancer

In this stage of liver cancer, a single mass in the liver has not spread to any blood vessels.

    ‘Stage II’ Liver Cancer

In this stage, the single mass has spread to the blood vessels. Also, there may be multiple tumours in the liver. However, the width of the tumours should be less than 5 centimetres.

    ‘Stage III’ Liver Cancer

There are three types (IIIA, IIIB, and IIIC) in the third stage of liver cancer.

    • Stage IIIA: There are multiple tumours in the liver in this stage, among which at least one tumour is larger than five centimetres. However, the tumours have not spread out of the areas of the liver.
    • Stage IIIB: In this stage, the cancer is a little critical where it has spread to the main blood vessel. However, it has not reached other organs or lymph nodes.
    • Stage IIIC: It is the final type in the third stage of liver cancer, where it may spread to nearby organs except the gallbladder. If it has not spread to other organs, it has extended from the tissues of the covering layer of the liver.

    ‘Stage IV’ Liver Cancer

There are two types (IVA, IVB) in stage IV:

    • Stage IVA: Here, cancer has already spread to lymph nodes. However, it has not spread to other distant organs.
    • Stage IVB: In this stage, the tumours may have spread to the lungs or bones. There may or may not be the spreading of cancer to the lymph nodes.

Various factors govern the cost of any medical procedure. So it is with liver cancer! The liver cancer operation cost in India depends on the stage and condition of the patient in addition to other factors. If you are looking for affordable prices, you may consider Dr Praveen Kammar, who is recognised all over the country for offering affordable cancer treatment.

The following things can increase the risk factor of primary liver cancer:

    • Chronic infection with Hepatitis: If you have a chronic condition of Hepatitis Virus B or C, it can increase the risk factor of primary liver cancer.
    • Certain inherited liver diseases: Inherited liver diseases like Wilson’s disease or hemochromatosis can increase risk.
    • Cirrhosis: Cirrhosis is a progressive health condition that can lead to liver cancer by causing scar tissue in the liver.
    • Excessive alcohol consumption: Consuming excess alcohol over a period can damage the liver and can lead to liver cancer.
    • Aflatoxins: Another risk factor is if food like nuts and corps are not properly stored, aflatoxins can be produced by moulds. Exposure to Aflatoxins can also lead to liver cancer.

You need to be aware of your health conditions and inform your doctor for better treatment.

There are multiple treatment processes available for liver cancer, including surgery, immunotherapy, radiotherapy. Depending on the severity of cancer, the doctor will decide which treatment is appropriate for you. The various types of treatments available for liver cancer are; Interventional Radiology, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, immunotherapy, gastroenterology, and targeted therapy.

Though there are different treatments available for liver cancer, it is advisable to get an overall body checkup at least once a year. If you need one of the best liver cancer treatments in India, consulting Dr Praveen Kammar can significantly help you.
