Ovarian cancer is a type of cancer in which malignant cells are found on the outer layer, near or inside the ovaries. The degree of the disease depends upon the type and stage of cancer. Ovaries are located in the female's body which stores the eggs or the germ cells. Additionally, the ovaries produce estrogen as well as progesterone hormones. Ovarian cancer is observed in women aged 35 to 74 years and one of the fifth most common cancer-causing deaths. When the diagnosis for the cancer is made at the early stage, the survival rate increases up to 90 per cent. If the medical professionals diagnose cancer at stage 3 or 4, then the chances for survival are only 28 per cent.

After the diagnosis of cancer, it is essential to understand the stage of cancer. The stage of cancer describes the spread of cancerous cells and the damage caused by it.

The four stages of cancer are described below:

    Stage 1:
The spread of the cancer is not beyond the ovaries. The 1A cancer means only one ovary is affected. Whereas 1B stage, cancer is present in both the ovaries. Stage 1C of ovarian cancer describes the situation where one or both the ovaries consist of cancerous cells, and the diagnosis may also reveal:

    • During the surgery, the outer capsule broke.
    • The capsule may have burst before the surgery.
    • Cancer cells are found outside the ovary.
    • Fluid washings of the abdomen might have cancer cells.

    Stage 2:

In this cancer, the cancerous cells may spread in one or both the ovaries and may even spread to other sites within the pelvis. In stage 2A, the cancerous cells may spread from ovaries to the uterus, fallopian tubes or both. Stage 2B of ovarian cancer involves the situation where the cancer cells move to the nearby organs such as the rectum, colon or bladder.

    Stage 3:

The cancerous cells are found in one or both the ovaries in stage 3 ovarian cancer. The cells may spread to lymph nodes in the abdomen and the lining of the stomach. In stage 3A of this cancer, lymph nodes or the pelvic organs are affected. Whereas in stage 3B, cancerous cells may damage the organs situated near the pelvis. Stage 3C involves the deposit of cancer cells in the liver or outside the spleen and lymph nodes.

    Stage 4:

It is considered the most advanced stage of ovarian cancer, and the malignant cancerous cells have spread into distant areas of the body. In stage 4A, cancer cells are evident in the fluid surrounding the lungs. Whereas in stage 4B, the fluid reaches inside the spleen or liver and the lymph nodes. Other organs highly affected due to stage 4 cancer are the brain, lungs, skin and liver.

The exact reason for ovarian cancer is unknown. But certain risk factors can contribute to the development of ovarian cancer. The risk factors are mentioned below:

    • Endometriosis
    • No history of pregnancy
    • The usage of fertility drugs
    • Hormonal therapies

    • History of colon, uterine or breast cancer
    • Genetic mutations in the genes BRCA1 or BRCA2 associated with ovarian cancer
    • A family history of ovarian cancer
    • Old age
    • Menopause

Patients can develop ovarian cancer if they have any of the risk factors mentioned above. They can also have cancer even if they are not suffering from any underlying medical conditions or contributing factors.
