    Frequently Asked Questions

Ovarian Cancer is a type of cancer in which malignant, cancerous cells are developed near, inside, or on the outer layer of the ovaries. Ovaries are the primary female gonads located on both sides of the uterus. These ovaries secrete female reproductive hormones estrogen and progesterone and release the eggs or germ cells.

Ovarian cancer is one of the primary causes of cancerous deaths in females aged 35-74. One in every 78 women develops ovarian cancer during their course of life. Several new cases of ovarian cancer are diagnosed every year, and among them, more than 50% of cancers are fatal.

Diagnosis and treatment of ovarian cancer in its early stages can improve the life expectancy by five years. Due to the non-specific symptoms of this condition and the lack of early detection tests, only 20 percent of the cases are detected in Stage I and II. The survival rates of individuals with the third or higher stage of ovarian cancer are significantly less. The general prognosis of ovarian cancer is not possible because of the nature of the disease.

Some of the primary signs and symptoms of Ovarian Cancer:

    • Abdominal swelling or bloating.
    • Quickly feeling full.
    • Unexplained weight loss.
    • Discomfort in the genitals.
    • Constipation or other problems in the bowel habit.
    • Frequent urge to urinate.

If you notice any of the symptoms, don't jump to any conclusion. To better understand the disease, consult at one of the best ovarian cancer hospitals in India. Alternatively, you can consult with Dr Praveen Kammar, who will guide you accurately on what should be your next steps.

Staging is the way of determining the spread of cancerous cells in one's body. The stage of cancer arbitrates the aggressiveness and fatality of any cancer. Diagnosing the stage helps the doctor decide on the best treatment methods and hypothesise the results.

The four stages of ovarian cancer:

STAGE I: Stage I indicates that the spread of cancerous cells has just been initiated, and it hasn't crossed the ovaries till now. Stage 1A suggests the presence of cancerous cells in only the ovary. On the other hand, stage 2A indicates the extent of cancerous cells in both ovaries. Furthermore, Stage 1C demonstrates that the outer capsule has been broken down before or during the surgery. It determines the presence of cancer cells outside the ovary.

STAGE II: Stage II indicates that either the cancerous cells are present in one or both the ovaries, but the cells have captured some other sites of the pelvis as well. Stage 2A indicates the movement of cancer to the fallopian tube and uterus. Stage 2B determines the migration of cancer to some of the nearby organs, including bladder, rectum or sigmoid colon.

STAGE III: Stage III of ovarian cancer is much more fatal than Stage I and II, as in this stage, apart from ovaries, the cancerous cells also develop in our abdomen or the lymph nodes of our gut. Stage 3A determines the migration of cancer from the pubic region to our abdominal lining or within the lymph nodes of our abdominal cavity. During Stage 3B, the cancerous cells move towards other organs near the genital region, like the spleen or lymph nodes or liver. Stage 3C then goes on to determine the accumulation of cancerous cells outside the spleen or liver.

Stage IV: It is the last stage of ovarian cancer, and it is the most life-threatening stage. During this stage, the cancerous cells would have left their original site and migrated to distant organs in our body. Stage 4A indicates the presence of cancer in the fluid present around the lungs. Stage 4B tends to determine that spread has reached the inside of the liver, spleen, or some other distant organs like the brain, lungs, or skin.

Determining the stage of your cancer is very vital as the whole treatment procedure depends on it. So you must opt for the best ovarian cancer treatment hospitals in India for proper diagnosis and treatment. Any mistakes during the diagnosis or treatment can be highly fatal, whereas undergoing the correct treatment can extend your life or improve the overall quality of life.

Though the definite cause of ovarian cancer is still unknown, these factors might increase the risk of developing this condition and hence must be checked upon very cautiously to prevent the occurrence of cancer.

The risk factors of ovarian cancer include:

    • The presence of ovarian cancer in your bloodline can double the risk of cancer affecting you.
    • Several genetic mutations are associated with ovarian cancer, like BRCA1 and BRCA2.
    • The previous occurrence of uterine, breast or colon cancer.
    • Obesity is one of the significant factors.
    • Usage of specific hormone therapy or fertility drugs.
    • Endometriosis.
    • No history of pregnancy.

Generally, ovarian cancer develops after menopause, making old age one of the risk factors of cancer. Having any of these risk factors is not a sure sign that you will be developing cancer. Even with these signs, you might not develop them. In contrast, you might get cancer even without the presence of any of these symptoms.

So as a precautionary measure, you may consider getting an annual health check-up. If you notice one or more of the symptoms, you might book an appointment with some of the best cancer treatment hospitals in your area of residence. The cancer specialist at the hospital can help diagnose your symptoms, perform tests to come to a conclusion and offer the right treatment.

Choosing the right hospital to get yourself treated might seem very challenging. Still, the vast number of hospitals and healthcare institutes have made the job immensely easy. Just a little effort will yield you the best results. Research!

Some of the crucial points you must considered before choosing the right hospital for your treatment include:

    • Ask around: Your friends and relatives will always recommend you the best thing. So instead of just relying on the internet, you can go around and ask the people you know who might have undergone similar treatment. Your decision should be based on real experiences. You can also check with your healthcare provider for the most reputed and best ovarian cancer hospital in India.
    • Focus on the doctor first: Your search must begin by looking for the best doctor along with the best hospitals. It is evident that a highly trained, recommended, and experienced oncologist will be practising at one of the best hospitals.
    • Conveyance: Check the hospital's proximity before selecting anyone for your treatment, as during chemotherapy or other treatment procedures, you might need to travel there constantly.
    • Check whether your insurance covers the care at the particular hospital, making the treatment much more affordable.
    • Always opt for a speciality cancer centre. Selecting a multi-speciality hospital can bring you into the care of many experienced and well-trained oncologists.

If you have the symptoms or have been diagnosed with ovarian cancer, you may look for the best ovarian cancer treatment hospitals in India or take an appointment with Dr Praveen, one of the best oncologists in India.
