    Frequently Asked Questions

Cancer that originates in the rectum or colon is known as colorectal cancer. The colon and rectum are integral parts of the large intestine. Older adults bear more risk of being inflicted with colorectal cancer.

Small clusters of polyps (cells in the colon) are formed inside the colon. As time goes on, these clusters grow bigger and become cancerous, resulting in colorectal cancer. You may not be able to observe any symptoms of the formation of polyps' clusters. That's why for diagnosis, frequent tests are conducted by specialists to make sure the cancer is detected on time and polyps clusters can be removed. There are various treatments available for colorectal cancer treatment, such as surgery, radiation therapy, immunotherapy, chemotherapy, targeted therapy, etc.

While there are many oncologists in the country, if you are looking for colorectal surgery in Mumbai, you can consult with Dr Praveen Kammar, one of the best colorectal surgeons in the country.

There are various symptoms of colorectal cancer, some of which are as follows:

    • Fatigue and exhaustion,
    • Bloating and pain in the abdomen,
    • Black or dark brown coloured stool (due to blood),
    • Diarrhea
    • Blood oozing out of the rectum.
    • Anaemia
    • A feeling of constipation.
    • Sudden and drastic weight loss.

If you face any of these symptoms, visit a doctor. Often, when a doctor notices signs of anaemia, they advise the patient to get tested for colorectal cancer.

It was found in a study that of the people who were diagnosed with colorectal cancer, 37% reported blood in the stool or rectum, 34% reported abdominal pain, and 23% reported the symptoms of anaemia.

Colorectal cancer is often detected in the later stages as the symptoms are not observed early on. If a patient shows any signs of jaundice (like yellowing of skin and eyes), cancer may have reached the liver. The patient may have shortness of breath and cough in case cancer has reached the lungs. If you come across these symptoms, consult Dr Kammar for colon cancer treatment in Mumbai.

Every cancer has five stages, from stage 0 to 4. The stages of colorectal cancer depend on the extent, growth and spread of cancer. It is vital to check if cancer has spread outside the originating organ, or has it reached any nearby organ. The five stages of colorectal cancer are as follows:

Stage 0: In Stage 0, colorectal cancer hasn't spread outside the mucosa or the innermost layer of the colon. It can be treated by eliminating the affected tissues using colonoscopy.

Stage 1: A stage 1 cancer spreads outside the submucosa or innermost layer to the next layer of the colon, but not yet to the lymph nodes. Surgery can treat over 90% of the patients diagnosed with stage 1.

Stage 2: In stage 2, cancer spreads outside the submucosa. The three substages in Stage 2 colorectal cancer:

    • Stage 2A: Although it has grown outside the submucosa, cancer has not yet reached the lymph nodes.
    • Stage 2B: In stage 2B, cancer reaches the membrane that holds the abdominal organs in place (visceral peritoneum). But it still hasn't reached the lymph nodes.
    • Stage 2C: Cancer has spread throughout the outer layer of the colon but still hasn't reached the lymph nodes.

55% to 80% of patients with colorectal cancer are treated and recovered by surgery. You may schedule an appointment with Dr Praveen Kammar for colorectal cancer surgery in Mumbai.

Stage 3: Stage 3 is further classified into three categories:

    • Stage 3A: Cancer has spread through the muscular layer of the colon to the lymph nodes. But they haven't yet spread to the nearby organs.
    • Stage 3B: It has spread through 1 to 3 lymph nodes but not to the nearby organs.
    • Stage 3C: Cancer has spread to more than four lymph nodes but not to the nearby organs.

Stage 3 colon cancer patients have a 40% chance of being cured and surviving. The patients go through chemotherapy after the surgery.

Stage 4: Stage 4 is further categorized into two categories:

    • Stage 4A: Stage 4A indicates that cancer has spread to one of the nearby organs like the lungs or liver.
    • Stage 4B: If cancer has spread to more than two or several nearby organs, it is in stage 4B

Stage 4 colorectal cancer has a recovery rate of around 14%. Surgeons categorize a patient to a particular stage after diagnosis and observe the body's symptoms and reactions. So it is necessary to visit a doctor instead of speculating.

Although colorectal cancer is rarely detected in its early stages, it can be treated using just the colonoscopy. It removes the cancerous cells or polyps from the colon lining or mucosa. In higher stages, it might become necessary to eliminate a part of or the whole colon. There are various other treatments for cancer like chemotherapy, immunotherapy, radiation therapy and targeted therapy. Colon cancer treatment cost in Mumbai depends upon the type of procedure and therapy being observed. A team of doctors consisting of specialists associated with colorectal cancer decides the type of cancer that would be most effective.

In surgery for colorectal cancer, the lumps of cancerous cells and tissues or tumours are removed from the colon and any of the nearby lymph nodes. In some instances, parts of or the whole colon may be removed in a more involved surgical treatment called Colectomy.

    Radiation Therapy
In radiation therapy, the treatment is given using high-intensity radiation (usually X-Rays) or particles to eliminate cancerous cells. If combined with chemotherapy, radiation therapy can be better for colorectal cancer. Radiation therapy is performed before or after the surgery.

In chemotherapy, the treatment is given using highly potent anti-cancer drugs observed orally or via an injection. These drugs shrink the tumours and eliminate the cancerous cells. Chemotherapy is one of the most often used treatments for colorectal treatment. A combination of chemotherapy and radiation therapy can be better for colorectal cancer treatment.

    Targeted Therapy
The drugs used in a targeted therapy are designed to target the specific type of cancer (in this case, colorectal cancer). Like chemotherapy drugs, these targeted drugs reach every part of the body, so they are suitable for cancer spread outside the origination organ. The targeted therapy can be used along with chemotherapy or when the chemo is no longer working.

As stated earlier, the oncologists decided these treatments based on the stage of cancer and how fast it is spreading.
