    Frequently Asked Questions

Sudden changes in the cells of the cervix cause cervical cancer. The cervix connects the uterus with the vagina. The cells damaged because of cervical cancer may affect the deeper tissues of the body. They can also spread to other body organs such as the rectum, vagina, bladder, liver and lungs.

Cervical cancer arises due to the infections caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV), and its vaccine can prevent the disease. The development of cervical cancer is slow, so it is possible that medical professionals can take actions before it produces severe complications in the body. The death rate of this cancer is significantly less due to increased screening and Pap test. The most likely age of acquiring this cancer is 35 to 44 years in the woman. Women 65 years of age have more than a 15 % chance of developing cervical cancer if proper care and screening tests are not done.

The other forms of cervical cancer include:

    • Mixed carcinoma:
Cancer involves the features of both adenocarcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma.
    • Adenocarcinoma:
A form of cancer that develops in mucus-producing cells.
    • Squamous cell carcinoma:
Cancer found in the lining of the cervix. It is the most common form of cervical cancer found in 90 per cent of cases.

Symptoms of cervical cancer are evident in the early stages. As cancer progresses, the symptoms also get severe. You should seek medical help if you notice any new symptoms, as many a time they can occur because of other medical conditions.

The signs and symptoms of cervical cancer are mentioned below:

    • Unexplained and persistent pelvic pain
    • Back pain
    • Bleeding after menopause
    • Pain during the sexual intercourse
    • Increased vaginal discharge
    • Bleeding after intercourse, pelvic examination or douching
    • Menstrual bleeding which is heavy and longer than the usual period
    • Blood spots or light bleeding between or following the mensuration

The Federation of gynaecology and obstetrics has categorised cervical cancer into many stages. The significant categories include:

    • Stage 0: Also known as carcinoma in situ. The cells with abnormal growth are present in the innermost lining of the cervix.
    • Stage 1: Also known as invasive carcinoma and is strictly limited to the cervix region.
    • Stage 2: The cancer cells spread beyond the uterus, but they do not enter the sidewalls of the pelvis or the lower part of the vagina.
    • Stage 3: When cancer spreads into the pelvic sidewall or the lower third of the vagina.
    • Stage 4: The cancer cells may spread into the rectum or mucosa of the bladder. They can also invade the true pelvis.

The significant risks factor for cervical cancer include:

    • Exposure to miscarriage prevention drug
Due to the consumption of DES, you may develop an increased risk of acquiring a particular type of cancer called clear cell adenocarcinoma.
    • Smoking
Excessive smoking may cause squamous cell carcinoma.
    • A weakened immune system
The weakening of the body's immune system due to infections such as HPV or other medical conditions may increase the risk of getting affected by cancer.
    • Sexually transmitted infections
Development of sexually transmitted diseases such as HIV/AIDS, syphilis, gonorrhoea or chlamydia, there is an increased risk of developing cervical cancer.
    • Early sexual activity
If you're having sex at a young age, then your chances of acquiring HPV infections increases.
    • Many sexual partners
Due to many sexual partners, you may get exposed to the viral infections caused by the human papillomavirus.
